F-15 vs F/A-18: Roles, Speed and Variants Compared

The F-15 and F/A-18 were designed around different operating problems. The F-15 family is land-based and emphasizes air superiority, speed, range and payload. The F/A-18 family is carrier-suitable and emphasizes multirole flexibility, low-speed handling, compact deck operations and naval integration. Neither is simply “better” without naming the variant and mission.

The terminology matters. “F-15 vs F-18” may compare the original F-15A/C Eagle with the F/A-18A/C Hornet, the two-seat F-15E Strike Eagle with an F/A-18F, or today’s F-15EX with the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. Those are not interchangeable comparisons.

Published maximum figures describe permitted aircraft performance under defined conditions; they do not predict combat outcomes or disclose classified capabilities.

First, Separate Hornet from Super Hornet

The F/A-18A/B/C/D Hornet and F/A-18E/F Super Hornet share a name and design lineage, but the Super Hornet is a substantially larger later aircraft. The Navy’s fact file says the E/F entered fleet service as the F-14 replacement and is roughly 7,000 pounds heavier than its predecessor, with greater range and fewer parts.

The single-seat letters are A, C and E; B, D and F are two-seat variants. The Navy retired the F/A-18C from its combat roles in 2018, while Marine Corps legacy Hornets have followed their own transition timeline. The E/F Super Hornet remains central to the Navy carrier air wing.

A valid specification table must therefore say whether “F-18” means a legacy Hornet or a Super Hornet. The figures below use the F/A-18E/F where a current naval comparison is intended.

Mission: Why the Aircraft Exist

F-15 Eagle family

The Air Force describes the original F-15 as an all-weather tactical fighter built to gain and maintain air supremacy. The F-15C/D concentrated on air-to-air work. The later two-seat F-15E added deep strike while retaining air-to-air capability, with a pilot and weapon systems officer sharing the workload.

The F-15EX continues the larger Eagle approach with modern mission systems, digital flight controls, an AESA radar and electronic-warfare upgrades. Boeing lists a maximum takeoff weight of 81,000 pounds and a payload capacity of 29,500 pounds for the EX. Manufacturer figures describe capacity, not the load used on every mission.

F/A-18 Hornet and Super Hornet family

The “F/A” designation reflects fighter and attack roles. The Navy lists air superiority, fighter escort, reconnaissance, aerial refueling, close air support, suppression of air defenses and precision strike among Super Hornet missions.

Carrier suitability changes the whole design problem. A naval aircraft must tolerate launch and arrested-landing loads, operate at controllable approach speeds and fit within crowded hangar and flight-deck workflows. Folding wings, naval landing gear, an arresting hook and corrosion considerations are mission-enabling features—not incidental weight.

Speed, Altitude and Range

The Air Force’s F-15C/D fact sheet lists Mach 2 class speed and a 65,000-foot ceiling. Boeing lists Mach 2.5 and a 50,000-foot ceiling for the F-15EX. The Navy lists Mach 1.8+ and 50,000+ feet for the F/A-18E/F.

That gives the F-15 family the clear published maximum-speed advantage. It does not mean an F-15 flies every mission at Mach 2, or that top speed decides an engagement. External tanks and weapons, altitude, temperature, mission fuel, maintenance limits and tactical requirements change usable performance.

Range comparisons are especially easy to misuse. Ferry range, combat radius and mission radius are different measurements. A figure with external tanks and no combat maneuvering cannot be compared directly with a combat profile that includes weapons, reserve fuel and time on station. Carrier location and organic aerial refueling also change the naval operational picture.

Payload and Weapons

The F-15’s larger airframe supports heavy fuel and weapons loads. The F-15EX is marketed for large payloads and can carry up to 12 AMRAAMs in specified configurations. The F-15E combines air-to-air missiles with a wide range of air-to-ground weapons for long-range strike.

The Super Hornet carries an internal 20 mm cannon and can employ air-to-air, anti-radiation, anti-ship and precision air-to-ground weapons. It can also carry a refueling store and serve as an airborne tanker for other carrier aircraft—an important fleet function that a simple missile-count comparison misses.

More theoretical stations or pounds do not automatically mean more combat effect. Aircraft launch with mission-specific combinations constrained by drag, range, target, carrier recovery limits, rules and available support.

Avionics and Modernization

Variant and upgrade block matter more than the family name. A modern F-15EX is not electronically equivalent to an early F-15A, and a Block III Super Hornet is not equivalent to an early F/A-18A.

The F-15EX adds modern radar, electronic warfare, networking, an open mission-systems architecture and a digital cockpit. The Super Hornet Block III program combines structural service-life work with an advanced cockpit, large-area display, avionics upgrades, networking and electrical-system modernization.

In April 2026, Naval Air Systems Command reported completion of the first fully organic Block III modification at Fleet Readiness Center Southwest. NAVAIR said the structural program expands service life from 6,000 to 10,000 flight hours and that Block III modernization will help keep the aircraft relevant into the 2040s.

Which Would Win in a Dogfight?

Public specifications cannot answer that responsibly. A close-range engagement depends on the exact versions, fuel and weapons carried, altitude, speed, initial position, sensors, electronic warfare, offboard information, pilot decisions and exercise rules. Real air combat also includes detection, identification, missiles and supporting aircraft long before an idealized turning contest.

The F-15 has stronger published speed and altitude figures. The F/A-18 is designed for controllability and naval multirole operations. Turning those truths into a guaranteed winner would go beyond the evidence.

Which Aircraft Is Better for Each Mission?

  • Land-based air superiority and high-energy intercept: the F-15 family was designed around this problem.
  • Heavy land-based strike: the F-15E and F-15EX offer major payload and range advantages.
  • Carrier air wing operations: the F/A-18E/F wins by design because the F-15 is not carrier-suitable.
  • Naval multirole flexibility: the Super Hornet combines fighter, strike, suppression, reconnaissance and tanker roles.
  • Absolute “best fighter”: there is no mission-free answer.
