Flightradar24 is the best all-around visual tracker for most aviation enthusiasts, FlightAware is strongest for airline status and developer-grade flight data, and ADS-B Exchange is the most useful of the three when an unfiltered community map is the priority. The right choice depends on the aircraft, location, history depth, interface and data rights you need.

No public tracker sees every aircraft. An aircraft must transmit usable information, receivers must hear it, and the service must have coverage and permission to display the relevant data. A missing icon is not proof that an aircraft is absent.

Flightradar24 is the easiest recommendation for someone who wants to identify an aircraft overhead, browse a busy airport or explore global traffic without learning a technical interface first. Its current product documentation lists web, iOS and Android access, aircraft and flight details, map filters, 3D view and a mobile augmented-reality view that labels nearby flights when the phone is pointed toward the sky.

The free service includes live tracking and a limited feature set. Flightradar24’s current plan comparison lists seven days of flight history for Basic users, 90 days for Silver, 365 days for Gold and three years for Business. Those limits can change, and the checkout price can vary by billing cycle, location and tax, so the official plan page is more reliable than a fixed price copied into a buyer guide.

Choose Flightradar24 when: you value a polished visual map, mobile plane identification, airport browsing, playback, filters and weather or aeronautical layers.

Look elsewhere when: the main goal is unfiltered aircraft visibility, or you are choosing an API for an application. Flightradar24 explicitly states that its API is sold separately from Silver, Gold and Business map subscriptions.

Best for Airline Status and APIs: FlightAware

FlightAware is a strong first stop for a scheduled flight because it presents route, airport, status, timing and alert information around the flight rather than treating the aircraft icon as the whole product. It also serves operators and developers, so its product family extends well beyond the consumer map.

For developers, FlightAware’s current AeroAPI documentation describes more than 60 endpoints with current flight status and tracks, airport activity, historical data on eligible tiers, alerts and predictive products. Pricing is usage-based. The Personal tier has no monthly minimum and currently includes up to $5 of usage per month, or up to $10 for eligible ADS-B feeders; Standard and Premium have larger minimums and different licensing rights. Per-query fees and terms can change, so calculate the actual endpoints and result sets your application will use.

Choose FlightAware when: the question is whether a commercial flight has departed, where it is in its trip, when it may arrive, or how to obtain structured flight-status data under documented API terms.

Look elsewhere when: you primarily want a highly visual spotting map or want the broadest possible display of aircraft that other platforms may suppress.

Best for Unfiltered Tracking: ADS-B Exchange

ADS-B Exchange describes its network as community-fed and unfiltered, combining ADS-B, Mode S and multilateration data. That makes its map particularly useful for military, government, test, cargo and private aircraft research—provided the aircraft is transmitting and the network can receive it.

“Unfiltered” does not mean omniscient. Aircraft can turn transponders off when permitted, transmit incomplete data, operate outside receiver coverage, use signals that do not provide a direct position, or appear only after multilateration succeeds. The map may also have less schedule and destination context because route information is not contained in every radio transmission.

The public map is accessible without buying a commercial data feed, but the old claim that its full API and historical tools are simply free for every use is no longer safe. ADS-B Exchange now promotes enterprise live and historical data products, and its support documentation directs commercial projects to formal access options. Feeders may receive additional map benefits. Check the current license before building or redistributing data.

Choose ADS-B Exchange when: you need to compare what an aircraft is actually broadcasting against platforms that may apply display restrictions, or you enjoy technical filters and community receiver data.

Look elsewhere when: you need a passenger-friendly itinerary view, authoritative airline notifications or a simple consumer interface.

Which Tracker Has the Best Coverage?

There is no defensible worldwide winner for every flight. Terrestrial ADS-B reception is line-of-sight: high-altitude aircraft can be heard from farther away than low aircraft, while terrain, antenna height, interference and receiver placement all affect coverage. MLAT requires suitable reception from multiple synchronized receivers. Satellite and aviation-authority data can fill some gaps, but access differs by platform and product.

Use a practical local test:

  1. Open the same flight or registration on all three services.
  2. Compare update recency, track continuity and the stated data source.
  3. Repeat with a low-altitude aircraft and a long-haul flight.
  4. Check the airports and regions you actually follow, not just a busy global view.
  5. Do not interpret a smooth interpolated line as proof of continuous live reception.

Which Tracker Shows Military Aircraft?

ADS-B Exchange is generally the first comparison map to try because its stated product identity is unfiltered aircraft data. But no tracker can display a position it never receives. Military aircraft may transmit normally, transmit limited Mode S information, use a tactical system not visible to public receivers, or stop broadcasting when operational rules allow.

  • Occasional live lookup: start with the free maps.
  • Longer playback and map layers: compare Flightradar24’s current plan matrix.
  • Flight status alerts: test FlightAware and Flightradar24 with the routes you use.
  • Unfiltered aircraft research: test ADS-B Exchange’s public map and account or feeder options.
  • Application development: compare endpoint cost, licensing, storage, redistribution and rate limits—not just a monthly label.

Can You Feed All Three Networks?

In many home-receiver setups, one receiver can send appropriately formatted data to multiple networks, subject to each service’s software, terms and hardware requirements.
